Distribution network management for low voltage, taking into account the active role of the prosumer
Purpose
The aim of the project is to develop and implement, within a pilot area, a new service for a modern electricity distribution network and a management system based on its use.
The project is being carried out under: the Smart Development Operational Programme 2014–2020
The service involves the prosumer’s active participation in the operation of the low voltage (LV) distribution network, to an extent determined by their own decisions. The benefits of the service will be enjoyed both by the distribution system operator, through reduced network operation and expansion costs, and by the prosumer, through the profits generated by providing this service. As a result of improved network management capabilities, the quality of energy supplied to consumers will improve, and the number and capacity of Renewable Energy Sources that can be connected to the grid without the need for its reconstruction will increase. To achieve this objective, an integrated and automated system for managing cooperation between the LV distribution network infrastructure and distributed energy sources installed in prosumer installations will be developed and implemented. The system will utilise new equipment designed specifically for this purpose, as well as installations already in operation by prosumers. Furthermore, an additional objective of the project is to establish a standard for micro-installation devices within the area of the network operator PGE-Dystrybucja S.A. In subsequent stages, the system’s operating principles will be defined, control algorithms will be developed and tested, and prototype devices enabling the provision of services will be designed and manufactured. The actual devices will first be tested in cooperation with a virtual grid, modelled using a real-time simulator (RTDS), and subsequently at selected prosumers’ premises within the real grid. In parallel, the economic aspects associated with the introduction of the services will be addressed.
Scope of the project
The project encompasses solutions that enhance efficiency, as well as the quality and reliability of power supply to consumers. It addresses the issue of grid operation by utilising the regulatory capabilities of prosumer devices, implemented via controllable switches for selected loads and sources, and controllable converters for sources and storage units. The solution proposed in the project provides the grid with observability and controllability, which increases grid operational safety and allows for the protection of its individual components against failures. The system will enable the effective use of grid infrastructure and its optimal utilisation, which is directly linked to the issue of energy efficiency and reduction of losses. By changing the prosumer’s role in the electricity supply process from passive to active, the solution will lead to the proper integration of distributed sources into the grid and enable their management.
