Grid inventory is the process of inventory of power grid assets, i.e. the recording of information about each grid element including its technical data and hierarchy in the data structure.

Grid inventory consists in the acquisition of actual power grid data (technical, topological, topographic) from paper and electronic sources and field inventories, and its entry into the information system. The acquired and described technical data about power grid elements, their mutual relations and their location make it possible to create a digital map of the network.

Inventory enables efficient operations, investment project planning, as well as modernisation. Power grid inventory is an essential part of building smart grids. The use of data also supports mobile solutions and field team management processes.

The starting point for the efficient management of road and street lighting infrastructure is to determine its current state based on an energy efficiency audit. The best way to determine the actual state of lighting in a given location is to carry out an on-site visit to collect typical data on the lighting network assets, as well as to measure the infrastructure and the illuminated areas. Awareness of the technical condition of power grid assets also translates into the legal aspect given that road lighting must comply with the Polish Standard transposing European Standard PN-EN 13201.
